Why Pubs Should Do Regular Business Gas Comparisons

All businesses should do regular business gas comparisons but if you run a pub you’ll know just how important this is. After all, every cost associated with running your business should be analysed and reduced as much as possible. This is absolutely necessary given the way consumer tastes constantly change and because there are increased levels of competition in the pub and entertainment markets.

Why You Should Compare?

Here are our four top reasons for doing regular business gas comparisons:

  • So you know the deals currently available – the business gas supply market changes regularly so the only way to understand what is available to you now is to do a gas comparison.
  • To lower costs – this is by far the most important reason for doing business gas comparisons. By comparing prices from a range of suppliers you can often lower the price you are paying now, particularly if you are on a variable or month-to-month contract. The reality is that the gas supply market is highly competitive, so suppliers offer rates to attract your business. In addition, you can also haggle to get those rates down even further. Of course, there are other ways you can reduce the amount of gas you use in your pub, including implementing energy efficient work practices and installing energy efficient equipment. One of the best ways to reduce prices, however, is to compare prices and switch to the lowest cost provider.
  • To get on a tariff that more closely matches your needs – even if your current gas provider offers excellent prices, you may still be able to find a tariff that is more suitable to pubs. Comparing prices and understanding the various suppliers and their specialist areas of service will help you do this.
  • To give you benchmark prices – regularly comparing gas prices can also give you figures you can use as benchmarks. This applies even if your current contract is not up for renewal. For example, you might find prices are cheaper and the tariff options more attractive depending on the time of year that you renew. If you renew at the around the same time every year and only do a price comparison at the time, you would not know this.

How Often Should You Compare Gas Prices?

The final question to consider is how often you should compare gas prices. This will depend on your business, but the more often you have a look at what the market is doing, the better. At the very least, however, you should conduct a gas price comparison every year. This applies even if you are on a long-term contract – it is always worthwhile having a look to benchmark your current tariff and costs against what is being offered at the moment.

Of course, it takes time to conduct a price comparison, and time is often scarce when you run a busy pub. It is worth it in the long-run, however, particularly when it comes time to agree a new contract with a gas supplier. The more information you have when it is time to switch, the more likely you are to get the best possible deal.
